Lady Gaga is the name on everyone’s lips right now.

Lady Gaga stole the show at the 2019 Oscars for her intoxicating duet performance ‘Shallow’ with co-star and director Bradley Cooper from A Star Is Born, but for also winning Best Original Song (and, not to mention a Best Actress Oscar nomination).

Lady Gaga started performing in local talent shows and open mic nights at school. Gaga's hit songs ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Just Dance’ landed her a supporting act on the Pussycat Dolls world tour. Many reviewers, including this one from the Herald Sun, said, “Lady Gaga comprehensively blew headliners the Pussycat Dolls off their own stage at Rod Laver Arena,” foreshadowing her future success in both the music and screen realms.

Lady Gaga’s Oscar-winning speech revealed the hard work and tenacity it takes to be truly successful. Gaga believes in following your passions, no matter who tries to pull you down.

“If you are at home, and you're sitting on your couch and you're watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work. I've worked hard for a long time, and it's not about winning. But what it's about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it. There's a discipline for passion. And it's not about how many times you get rejected or you fall down or you're beaten up. It's about how many times you stand up and are brave and you keep on going. Thank you!”

Therefore, what can we learn from these wise words?

If you have a dream, you'll need the drive

The idea of dreams or having ambition is such a vast concept and open to interpretation. Many believe that talent is the key to success. This is not necessarily true. In fact, the real underdog is ambition; having a strong desire to achieve something that perhaps is out of your comfort zone. Even though Lady Gaga has exceptional talent, she did not achieve fame and success because of this. Lady Gaga previously wrote hit songs for Britney Spears, Fergie, and The Pussycat Dolls among others but never could get the spotlight until rapper Akon gave her the chance. Lady Gaga worked vigorously to have her music heard the way she had envisioned. A year later, her first album The Fame was released, catapulting to the top of the charts.

Find your passion and strengths and charge with confidence

Lady Gaga started playing piano and found her strength as a talented musician. She also found that songwriting came naturally to her. Gaga took a huge risk and dropped out of NYU Tisch School of the Arts to pursue a music career. She aims to encourage people like you to find something you are passionate about and follow that passion with all the courage and confidence you have.

Seek a purpose for your life

Reading music to Gaga came as fluently as reading a book, and she knew she had a purpose to bring new music into this world. Yet, she has done so much more than this. Not only is she one of the highest selling musicians of all time, but she has also launched a non-for-profit organisation called Born This Way, helping to empower youth to live their best life. If you have a passion and talent for something then you should follow that instinct and make it your life's purpose. Lady Gaga believed in herself when those around her did not. Keep the faith that you are exceptional and deserve to achieve your biggest goals.

Be open to possibilities

Lady Gaga suffered a great deal of adversity along her journey to success; she was bullied as a teenager, fired from her record label company, suffered from fibromyalgia (extensive muscle pain) and was dealing with other health issues. One thing that Gaga kept in her stride was the ability to keep an open mind and see potential in any possibility. This growth mindset is what made her grow from a support act to a winner at the BAFTAs, the Grammy Awards, the Golden Globes and now the Oscars. If you see an opportunity that could be right for you - be a leadership position, an internship, an idea you want to pursue, or an experience to have - explore the possibilities of where it could take you and work as hard as you can to make it happen the way you want it to.

Everyone has a passion. If you do not know what it is, find it by exploring as many hobbies as possible such as sports, arts, performance, science, mathematics, English, community, and so much more. If Lady Gaga can achieve her wildest ambitions, so can you. Just be prepared to work harder than you ever have before.
